Gosainkunda Festival, Legend says, when a devastating poison was taking over the whole world, Lord Shiva with his powers took all that poison, but unable to swallow it, he suffered a great deal holding the poison in his throat, thus climbed up to the Himalayas, his home and with his trident struck at the formidable Himalayas causing it to explode a stream so cold and pure that it clenched out all the harshness of the poison. Thus, to commemorate this heroic act of Lord Shiva Hindus as well as Buddhist pilgrims dare this adventure to the womb of the Himalayas to pay homage and worship Lord Shiva. People take a bath at the pond, supposed to have built from the water of the stream as an act of cleaning the poison and bitterness out of their lives and change a very sacred thread known as ‘Janai' in Janai Purnima.
