The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2800m) kickstarting the ascend with a short trek to Phakding, a small Sherpa Village, up through the valley of the milky river, known as Dudh Koshi amongst the locals to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Sherpa country, exploring the riches of the cultures and traditions of the people in the local village. The trek move towards Tengboche, through Khunde and khumjung below Khumbuyula, a sacred mountain of the Sherpas in the Khumbu valley where one can bare witness the skull of mystical yeti. Tengboche monastery in Tengboche, (3867m) serves as a major landmark of the devotion of the Sherpa community towards Buddhism making it not only a religious centre but the breathtaking panorama that the mountains construct around the area resembles a beautiful set work of a wisely crafted movie including the Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse.
The community hunting ban in this area serves as a chance to witness the co-existence between the wild animals and the humans that can be seen lingering around the monastery, so don’t be surprised when a musk deer is about. Be prepared to be amazed. Moving past chhortens and steep hills, the trek through the Khumbu Glacier , leaving behind great snow walls, and glacial moraine behind us finally arriving at the Everest Base Camp (5335 m). The trek seems even more worthwhile upon reaching the black rock, known as Kalapatthar (5545 m) in the local tongue overlooking Ama Dablam, the Everest and Pumpri towering behind.
Cho la pass known for its challenging adventures because it is not only physically demanding but also tiring due to the harsh conditions and geography while conquering this quest of a lifetime. The Cho-La pass can be ventured as an extension of both, the Gokyo Valley trek or the Everest Base Camp. Cho La is the summit pass (5420m) that connects the Gokyo in the village of Thagnak (4700m) to the west and Dzongla (4830m) in the east to the Everest Base camp. Hence it can be ventured as the extension of any of these two treks. These two villages have been connected by Ngozumpa glacier, one of the longest glaciers which consist of unstable edges requiring trekkers to use crampons.
The Gokyo region is also famous for its lakes, Gokyo itself being one of the most important and famous amongst the five. Our name 5th Lake has also been derived from the Fifth lake of the region.
The trek not only serves a breathtaking palate of lakes but also the panoramic view of the whole Everest Region covering obviously the Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Pumori and Thamsekru. The view from the top of Gokyo ri makes all the trouble look like it had been nothing. It all seems more than justifying.
