Annapurna can be termed as the jewel of western Nepal. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the world’s most popular and spectacular trek as it starts from the world famous City of Lakes-Pokhara.
The trek starts from Naya Pool in Pokhara taking a steep climb to Ghorepani, ascending further to Poon Hill, one of the most breathtakingly spectacular highlights of the trek which serves as a view point of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak, Mt Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre known as the fishtail and the deepest gorge-Kali Gandaki. This is just the beginning of the excitement as the trek takes on a thrilling adventure of a lifetime going through beautiful Rhododendron forests and wild flowers, the subtle hospitality and warm smiles of the local people served with the ethnic food and cultural program in the Gurung villages making it all worthwhile. After tracking back to Ghorepani from Poonhill, the trek continues towards Chhomrung, which is the last place one ought to be finishing any shopping required for the trek because as the trek continues towards higher grounds the number of lodges, shops decline as it is preserved and maintained by ACAP.
The trek takes a pause at the Machhapuchhre Base Camp at the foothills of Mount Machhapuchre overlooking the mountain itself and Annapurna South and Himal chuli. The trek finally reaches its destination after a 2-3 hours of walk arriving at the foothills of the snow-clad Annapurna towering right in front of us. Attractive as it seems, Annapurna trek can sometimes be difficult than it sounds specially in winter when the snowfall is persistent and it is advisable to have crampons along.
